Robert Adler, James I. Farr Chair and professor of law at
the S.J. Quinney College of Law, published an op-ed titled “Debate over
proposed GSL project is democracy in action” in The Salt Lake Tribune on July 23, 2009.
Adler’s op-ed was a response to Rep. Kerry Gibson’s piece
that favored Great Salt Lake Minerals Corporation’s proposal to significantly
expand its operations in Great Salt Lake and viewed public hearings on the
matter as unnecessarily delaying the review process of the permit application. Adler
responded, “members of the public who take their valuable time to comment in
this kind of public process, on any side of any issue, are not disrupting
orderly review. They are participating in, improving and informing an orderly
review. Whether they ‘win’ or ‘lose’ on any specific issue, they are simply
being good citizens in an open democratic society.”
