Students classified as nonresidents are required to pay nonresident tuition. Nonresident students may petition the University Admissions Office for resident status after completing 40 law school credit hours while remaining in Utah during that time period (approximately 1-1.5 years). Petitions must be submitted at least 30 days before the beginning of the semester and must demonstrate satisfactory academic progress, and intent to reside permanently in Utah. Students who begin their law studies as nonresidents usually are able to obtain resident status by the spring semester of their second year. If nonresident law students take 9 law credit hours during summer school, they can obtain residency by fall of their second year. More information on residency may be obtained from the University's Residency Office at (801) 581-3089 or www.sa.utah.edu/admiss/ResInstruct.htm.

A number of programs assist you in financing your legal education, including merit and need-based scholarships, fellowships, summer stipends, loans, and part-time employment. Check out our financial aid page for links to these resources.
